The connections between art and music have been an
inspiration for artists in different epochs. Within the
framework of inauguration of the joint project of Artur
Rubinstein Philharmonic Orchestra and Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, the
sounds of Rothko Chapel will appear in the space of the ms2 .
Morton Fieldman’s piece written for choir, viola, celesta and
drums was composed in 1971. The Rothko Chapel in Houston is the
seat of a foundation, being at the same time a chapel and an art
gallery. It was built between the years 1964-1971 thanks to a
donation made by John and Dominique Menil, a pair of
distinguished patrons of art. However, Feldman’s piece was not
inspired by the works of Mark Rothko that are presented in the
Rothko Chapel, but was written to take its place in the space
filled with the artist’s paintings. The minimalist music suits
the atmosphere of contemplation of the works of art. The piece
is going to be performed by the Choir of the Lodz Philharmonic
Orchestra, led by Maciej Salski. This concert will be the first
one from the planned cycle of joint projects under the name
Museum of Sounds.
