Collection of
art of XX and XXI century – permanent exposition
in ms2
Museum of Art in Łódź has one of the most
abundant sets of XX and XXI century art in
Europe. The main value of the collection, which
for the most part included artworks from the
area of experimental art, is its openness to the
present. The heart of the collection is
Międzynarodowa Kolekcja Sztuki Nowoczesnej (International
Collection of Contemporary Art) of the „a.r”
group. It is worldwide phenomenon. It was
initiated by the artists themselves. Thanks to
the efforts of subsequent directors, the
collection has systematically extended. In ms2 ,the
collection will be presented on the area of over
3000 m2 – much larger than that of the present
building. The emergence of the concept of a
permanent exposition was preceeded by an
intensive period of preperations: Sketches for
the collection – three exhibitions showing works
from the Museum in entierely new perspectives.
This exhbitions were: Sztuka i Polityka (Art and
Politics), Siła Formalizmu (The Power of
Formalism) and Poza zasadą rzeczywistości (Beyond
the Rule of Reality). The Sketches were a
preview of the new concept of a permanent
exposition in the museum. Its fundamental
assumption is to consantly provide a refreshed
image of art, presenting it as significant from
the perspective of contemporary audience.
Therefore, this concept radically breaks with
the chronological rule dominating in exhibitions.
Situating artworks on a timeline renders them
mere illustrations of an age, direction or
artistic movement. At the exhibiton in ms2 an
artwork appears not as a souvenir of the past –
obtaining value only through this – but as a
phenomenon and a statement significant for us
today. The method of organization of the
exposition is based on four triads of concepts -
those important for relections on contemporary
culture, and those that can be transferred from
the „a.r” collection. These concepts will
include, among others: „utopia”, „image”, „body”
or „phantasm”. A narration is proposed to the
audience, which can – but does not need to be
used. Its goal is to provide a form of
perception of modern art that is alternative to
the dominating concepts – one that will allow to
focus on identification of not only historical
and artistical relations, but also of meanings
related to the present, to the issues which are
vital for us here and now.
